History of the PAB

The People Against Bureaucracy Group was formed in February 1976 following a public meeting in Up Hatherley. At that time a group of concerned ratepayers wished to abolish the many secret meetings, reduce Council bureaucracy, achieve better value for money for ratepayers and constructively criticise policies and expenditure of the Council. PAB support was mainly in what had been called the Cheltenham Rural District Council prior to 1974 but was then part of Tewkesbury Borough Council. Within 9 weeks of formation, the voters of Tewkesbury Borough had elected five PAB Borough Councillors and much progress was made. Over the years many more PAB Councillors were elected at Parish, Borough and County level and the Groups' Councillors were respected for their independence and common sense approach. Following a further Local Authority reorganisation, much of the original Cheltenham Rural District Council on the outer areas of Cheltenham were moved into an enlarged Cheltenham Borough Council. Since then the People Against Bureaucracy Group has fought and successfully won council seats on the Cheltenham Borough Council.

THE PAB GROUP IS NOW OVER 30 YEARS OLD!
